The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team lost to Pasadena First Baptist Christian Academy 52-44 Feb. 14 in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.
The Flames end their season as the co-District 3-3A champions, their fourth consecutive district crown.
“Kudos to the Warriors,” Flames head coach Zakk Revelle said. “They were prepared and played well. They are a really good team. (Feb. 14) wasn’t our day.”
The two teams played to a 14-14 tie after the first quarter. Faith outscored PFBCA (fourth place, District 5-3A) 17-12 with senior power forward Brock Davis dropping in 11 points. That helped the Flames build a 31-26 half-time advantage.
But that evaporated in the third quarter. Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm with Faith having no more than a four-point advantage. But the Warriors went on a 7-0 run with 4 minutes and 24 seconds left in the period to take a 37-34 lead going into the final quarter.
By then the Warriors found their offensive groove. They spread the floor to bring Faith’s big men — Will Lewis, Asher Apel and Davis — away from the basket to let their players drive to the hoop in one-on-one match-ups. They also didn’t need more than one shot per possession.
That resulted in a 7-0 run that ended when Lewis scored on a tip-in to trim the deficit to 47-39 with 4:12 left in the contest. Davis scored what turned out to be Faith’s final points this season by making two free throws to cut into the Warriors’ lead at 47-41.
The Warriors scored only three 2-point field goals in the fourth quarter but dropped in nine free throws to seal the win. They were 11 for 21 for the contest. The Warriors had three players in double figures.
Revelle noted PFBCA plays in a district that features numerous top 10 teams and hadn’t played in many basketball games because of long football season.
“They played in the state championship in football,” he said. “They’re battle tested. Kudos to them.”
Davis led all scorers with 25 points followed by Lewis with nine and Diego Chavia with eight.
The 2023 class graduates with four consecutive district titles. This is only the second time the Flames have lost a home postseason game in the history of the program.
“Big credit to our seniors,” Revelle said. “They played hard.”
